Pediatrics
Whether your child requires a few stitches, or has a more serious health condition, Palms West Hospital is the place to turn. Our pediatrics program offers a full complement of healthcare services and is a hub of specialized pediatrics services for a six county surrounding area. Essentially, we offer all the services of a pediatric hospital. At Palms West Hospital, service to our pediatric patients, their families and our community reflects an ongoing commitment to exceptional patient care. Additionally, we have a commitment to training new generations of Pediatricians through our Medical Education and Residency programs.
Palms West Hospital is the only hospital in the Western Communities with a dedicated Pediatrics Department and dedicated Pediatric professionals including: nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, and clinical dietitians.
Exclusively for young patients and staffed by board-certified pediatricians and pediatric specialists, our pediatric unit features 29 allPrivate beds and 8 PICU beds. Our PICU is staffed by a team of high-level healthcare professionals and features the latest equipment for the most critically ill young patients. Should emergency patient transport be necessary, our experienced Pediatric Transport Team is at your service.
Each room in the pediatric unit reflects our outer space theme, named for a planet, star, or constellation, and furnished with kid-friendly décor. Even at the hospital, a child's room should be a safe haven. That's why Palms West Hospital has added separate rooms where children can be transferred for any specialized treatment their condition may require. Afterwards, they can return to the cozy familiarity of their own private rooms.
Our Pediatric unit features a playroom where children can feel safe and comfortable while taking a needed break from their treatment schedule, as well as a teen room with computers and internet access. We also have a full-time Child Life Specialist who provides therapeutic play and developmentally appropriate activities for patients, reduces the stress of hospitalization, and provides support to patients and their families.
Our staff of 35 general pediatricians and 29 sub-specialists essentially covers all specialty areas. Our specialized pediatric services include Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Oncology, Pediatric Anesthesia, sedation services, venous access and other procedures. Pediatric Hematology Oncology Program
Palms West Hospital has the Western Communities’ only Pediatric Hematology Oncology Program. This program includes both inpatient and outpatient procedures and treatment. This program helps ease the burden on area families by providing comprehensive care closer to home. In our Outpatient Infusion Center, Certified Pediatric Oncology Nurses administer chemotherapy, blood products and infusions for Pediatric Oncology and Immunocompromised Patients. “Caring for children with cancer and blood diseases is complex and requires emotional sensitivity,” says Dr. Melissa Singer, the area’s only Pediatric Hematologist Oncologist. Dr. Singer works with Pat Swasey, Oncology Nurse Educator, to provide the kind of care these young patients need and deserve.

What is special about sedating a child?
Children are not small adults. Their physical and emotional needs are unique.
The sedation plan is determined by the Pediatric Intensive Care Physician. Type of medication and care decisions are determined based on your child’s age, weight, medical history and the duration of the test and the least invasive way to achieve the desired test result.
We frequently use medicines that generally sedate quickly with few side effects and provide a fast recovery.
Our Pediatric Sedation Service includes highly trained Pediatric critical care nurses to care for our child throughout the entire process.
If you have any concerns or questions, we urge you to discuss them either with your child’s physician or you can call our Pediatric Sedation Service directly at (561) 789-3300 ext 2311
